What Is Inpatient Rehabilitation

Residential care, around the clock, around you.

Inpatient rehabilitation means living at Ascot Rehab Hospital while receiving intensive, structured therapy from our multidisciplinary team. It is recommended for patients in the early stages of recovery from a significant neurological event — when rehabilitation intensity, medical monitoring and 24-hour nursing support are essential.

Research consistently shows that the timing and intensity of rehabilitation in the early recovery window directly determines long-term outcomes. Our inpatient programme is designed to deliver both.

Two programmes. One team.

We offer two inpatient rehabilitation streams — matched to your current level of function and neurological recovery potential.

Stream 01
Active Stream
For patients who can actively participate in 3+ hours of therapy per day and are in the post-acute phase of neurological recovery.
Intensity
High
  • Minimum 3 hours of face-to-face MDT therapy daily
  • Physiotherapy, OT, SLT and neuropsychology sessions
  • Goal-directed, outcomes-measured programme
  • Weekly MDT review and goal-setting meetings
  • Consultant ward rounds twice per week
  • Hydrotherapy and robotic technology access
  • Discharge planning from day one
Stream 02
Slow Stream
For patients with complex needs who require less intensive therapy but still benefit from specialist inpatient care and 24-hour nursing support.
Intensity
Moderate
  • 1–2 hours of therapy per day, paced to tolerance
  • Specialist nursing care 24 hours per day
  • Consultant-led clinical management and monitoring
  • Fortnightly MDT review with family involvement
  • Gradual progression toward Active Stream when ready
  • Fatigue management built into the daily programme
  • Long-term placement option for complex cases
The Evidence

Intensity and timing change outcomes.

BSRM and NICE guidelines recommend early, intensive, goal-directed rehabilitation for all adults recovering from significant neurological injury. The earlier rehabilitation begins and the more intensive it is, the better the long-term outcome.

"Access to specialist inpatient rehabilitation is the single most important factor in determining long-term neurological outcomes."

Common questions answered.

Can't find your answer? Call us on 020 8149 4544 — our admissions team will guide you from first enquiry to admission.

01
How long is a typical inpatient stay?
Most inpatient stays range from 4 to 24 weeks, depending on injury severity, rate of progress and discharge destination. Duration is reviewed regularly by the MDT with the patient and family.
02
What is the difference between Active and Slow Stream?
Active Stream provides 3+ hours of therapy daily. Slow Stream provides 1–2 hours of paced therapy for patients with complex needs, fatigue or limited tolerance — with the option to progress as recovery allows.
03
Can family visit during admission?
Yes. We actively encourage family involvement. Visiting hours are generous, family members are invited to attend therapy sessions and MDT meetings, and we provide family education to support the transition home.
04
Is funding available?
Inpatient rehabilitation can be funded via NHS continuing healthcare, insurance, medico-legal case management or self-pay. Our admissions team will advise on the most appropriate funding route.
05
What conditions do you treat as inpatients?
We treat all neurological conditions including stroke, acquired brain injury, spinal cord injury, MS, Parkinson's disease, Guillain-Barré syndrome and complex trauma, as well as post-surgical rehabilitation.
06
What happens when I am ready for discharge?
Discharge planning begins on day one. We coordinate home adaptations, equipment, community referrals and outpatient follow-up — no cliff-edge end to specialist care.
07
Do you accept international patients?
Yes. Our admissions team can assist with travel arrangements, visa letters and international insurance coordination. Please contact us to discuss your specific requirements.
08
How do I make a referral?
Call 020 8149 4544 or email info@ascotrehab.com. We accept GP, consultant, case manager, medico-legal and self-referrals — UK and international patients welcome.
